These essays are an inspiration in the variety of ways of speaking, different instruments of communication, and the inextricable links we have to the natural world.

Enjoy!

“What might happen if you could summon back into the mouth what also should be summoned back into the landscape?”

–Robert Macfarlane

Our world is expressed in a great variety of voices. What is lost when one of these languages disappears? This week, we revisit five stories from our Language issue that explore the power, beauty, and implications of a speaking world:

“Language Keepers,” our six-part award-winning film and multimedia experience, follows four Indigenous communities in California who are working to overcome language loss and revitalize their cultures. In her essay “Losing Language,” Camille T. Dungy reflects on loneliness and extinction. David Haskell brings you on a sonic journey in “The Voices of Birds and the Language of Belonging.” And in our in-depth interview, “Speaking the Anthropocene,” Robert Macfarlane articulates the consequence, the responsibility, and the pleasure of naming the living world.

California once had more linguistic variety than all of Europe. Today, the indigenous communities in the region that still have fluent speakers of their native language face an impending crisis: the disappearance of any living speaker in the coming decades. "Language Keepers" is a multimedia experience that features four sites of indigenous language revitalization in California. Following members of the Karuk, the Tolowa, the Wukchumni, and the Kawaiisu peoples, "Language Keepers" explores how the loss of a language reaches much further than the disappearance of words.

Daisy Hildyard examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has drawn our attention toward the space between things. She notes that these “negative spaces” reveal relationships that normally lie beyond our perception. The intertwinement of our lives—human, plant, animal—has become more apparent: our lives trace through other beings, and their lives trace through our own.
