</span><span style="color:#1f497d">was recently </span><span style="color:#1f497d">recogni</span><span style="color:#1f497d">zed with an honorary degree from the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland, for her</span><span style="color:#1f497d"> contributions to interpersonal
and intercultural communication, and </span><span style="color:#1f497d">her longstanding
</span><span style="color:#1f497d">connection to</span><span style="color:#1f497d"> the university</span><span style="color:#1f497d"> since the 1990s. Part of that connection was
</span><span style="color:#1f497d">her</span><span style="color:#1f497d"> develop</span><span style="color:#1f497d">ment of</span><span style="color:#1f497d"> an intercultural communication course that teamed
</span><span style="color:#1f497d">University of </span><span style="color:#1f497d">Iowa students with Finnish ones to work online on group projects,
</span><span style="color:#1f497d">a kind of</span><span style="color:#1f497d"> virtual study abroad. This ceremony, held every four years, marked the 150<sup>th</sup> anniversary of the
</span><span style="color:#1f497d">Finnish </span><span style="color:#1f497d">university. Other honorary doctors in the group of 15 were Sauli Niinisto, president of Finland, and Markku Jokinen, former president of the World Federation of the Deaf.</span><span style="color:#1f497d"></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size:12pt; font-family:'Tahoma','sans-serif'; color:#1f497d">Gerry Philipsen</span></b><span style="color:#1f497d"> has been elected a Distinguished Scholar by the National Communication Association.</span><span style="font-size:10pt; font-family:'Arial','sans-serif'; background:white; color:#333333">
</span><span style="color:#1f497d">The NCA Distinguished Scholar Award was created in 1991 to recognize and reward NCA members for a lifetime of scholarly achievement in the study of human communication. Recipients are selected to showcase the communication profession.</span>
