54th International Conference of Americanists: Symposium

The Language of Space in Latin American Indigenous Languages

A symposium on "The Language of Space in Latin American Indigenous Languages" will be held at the 54th International Conference of Americanists 15-20 July, in Vienna, Austria. Researchers working with Latin American indigenous languages are invited to submit abstracts in this thematic area by August 31, 2011 to the ICA54 conference website:

The intersection of language and spatiality is a topic that cross-cuts linguistic, ethnographic and cognitive questions. Significant work has been done in this area in linguistics and related disciplines but the topic has yet to be approached by Latin Americanists within a regional framework, asking questions about specific linguistic families or contact-based areal phenomena around the region. This symposium aims to bring together researchers working with languages from around Latin America to take stock of the diversity of spatial language, to identify commonalities and significant regional trends, and to form a network of scholars interested in future projects on this topic. 

The variety of landscapes that indigenous peoples of Latin America live in (including lowland forests, highlands, deserts and coasts) prompts interesting questions about the possible relationships between linguistic systems and geography. Both on large geographical scales and at the micro-level of local activities indigenous American languages feature diverse linguistic resources for referring to space that can be approached through descriptive linguistics or through their implications for cognition or social practices. In addition, the large number of different language families and isolates in the region, many of which are under-documented in terms of their resources for talking about space, presents an opportunity to contribute to linguistic typology. All studies should include a new account or analysis of some previously-unstudied aspect of spatial language in the language(s) of study, but papers may take a range of analytical and thematic approaches, including but not limited to:

1	Toponyms and systems of topographic terms and relations 
2	Frames of reference (like "geocentric": "up/downriver" or "up/downhill", etc.)
3	Deictic systems that index location
4	Grammatical classes related to space (for example: positionals, motion verbs) 
5	Multimodality and gesture (like pointing practices)
6	Place reference in social interaction
7	Studies using controlled stimuli focusing on space and spatial cognition
8	Relationships between spatiality and temporality
9 	Ethnographic accounts of spatial language in social context

Abstracts should be between 1000 and 2000 characters - other guidelines are available on the online submission site: https://ica2012.univie.ac.at/home/. Abstracts will be accepted in English, Spanish or Portuguese. While the symposium is focused on Latin America, researchers working with North American languages or sign languages of the Americas are also welcome to submit. Simposio: 54 Conferencia Internacional de Americanistas 

El lenguaje espacial en idiomas indígenas latinoamericanos

Este simposio titulado "El lenguaje espacial en idiomas indígenas latinoamericanos" tendrá lugar en el 540 Conferencia Internacional de Americanistas (ICA54) del 15 al 20 de julio de 2012 en Vienna, Austria. Aquellos investigadores que  trabajen con idiomas indígenas latinoamericanos están invitados para enviar resúmenes en esta área temática antes del 31 de agosto de 2011 al siguiente sitio web de ICA54:

La relación entre el lenguaje y el espacio es un tópico de interés para  las perspectivas lingüísticas, etnográficas y cognitivas. Se han producido muchos trabajos significativos en esta área, tanto en  lingüística, como en otras disciplinas cercanas, sin embargo el tópico no ha sido investigado todavía por latinoamericanistas en un marco regional, en el que se pregunte por las  familias lingüísticas específicas o fenómenos areales de contacto regional. El propósito de este simposio es reunir a  investigadores especialistas en idiomas de diferentes partes de Latinoamérica para discutir  la diversidad del fenómeno de la espacialidad en el lenguaje, identificar aspectos comunes y patrones regionales, y formar una red de investigadores   interesados en  futuros proyectos sobre este tópico. 

La variedad de paisajes donde están los pueblos indígenas de Latinoamérica (incluyendo bosques tropicales, sierras, desiertos y costas) genera  preguntas interesantes sobre la relación entre los sistemas lingüísticos y  geograficos. Los idiomas indígenas americanos cuentan con diversos recursos lingüísticos para hacer referencia al espacio, tanto para escalas geográficas grandes, como para micro-escala de actividades locales  que pueden ser estudiados tanto desde la lingüística descriptiva, como desde sus implicaciones para la cognición o las prácticas sociales. Además, de la gran variedad  de  familias lingüísticas en la región, muchas de las cuales cuentan  con muy poca documentación sobre los  recursos lingüísticos para referirse al  espacio, lo que representa una oportunidad para contribuir a la tipología lingüística. Todos los estudios deben incluir una descripción nueva o un nuevo análisis de un aspecto lingüístico para referirse al espacio que no haya sido investigado previamente en el idioma (o los idiomas) de estudio. No obstante,  las contribuciones pueden basarse en  un amplio rango de marcos analíticos y temáticos que incluya , pero no sólo se limite a:

1	Topónimos y sistemas de términos y relaciones topográficos
2	Marcos de referencia (como "geocéntrico": "rio o cuesta arriba/abajo", etc.)
3	Sistemas deícticos que indiquen ubicación
4 	Clases gramáticales espaciales (posicionales, verbos de movimiento)
5	Multi-modalidad y gestos (como prácticas de señalamiento)
6	Referencias a lugares  durante la interacción social
7	Estudios que usen estímulos controlados que se centren  en la espacialidad y cognición
8	Relación entre lo espacial y lo temporal
9	Etnografía del uso de lenguaje espacial en su contexto social

Los resúmenes deben tener entre 1000 y 2000 caracteres - otros requisitos pueden  encontrarse en página web a la que deben ser enviados los resúmenes: https://ica2012.univie.ac.at/es/inicio/. Los resúmenes se aceptaran en inglés, castellano o portugués. Aunque el enfoque del simposio es Latinoaméra, también se aceptarán trabajos sobre idiomas norteamericanos o lenguajes de señas de las Américas.
