<P>SYNOPSIS:<BR>Languages are becoming extinct at a rate exceeding that of biological <BR>species, with the extinction of 80-90% of the languages now extant <BR>predicted within 100 years. For both social and scientific reasons this <BR>is a matter of great concern, but there has been little discussion of <BR>how best to approach this problem. This symposium will discuss what our <BR>goals should be, what strategy is most likely to achieve them, and what <BR>methods should be used. More specifically, the following questions will <BR>be addressed: (a) What constitutes good documentation? We generally <BR>consider small languages to be well served if there exist a decent <BR>grammar, dictionary, and collection of narrative texts, by a single <BR>person, yet there is much still unknown about major languages, for <BR>which enormous resources exist and which have been studied by hundreds <BR>of people. What does really complete documentation consist of? What <BR>should we aim for in the
case of endangered languages? (b) How can we <BR>best go about obtaining good documentation? Is it possible, as some <BR>linguists and funding agencies propose, to collect a large amount of <BR>material in a fairly short time for subsequent long-term analysis, or <BR>must data-collection and analysis be interwoven? (c) How can advanced <BR>technology, including software developed for work with large corpora of <BR>major languages, be of help? (d) How should resources best be <BR>allocated?
