Even though it is specifically about transitivity, [Pilar] not only did an overview of the grammar of the language but also had to look at just about everything in order to analyze this language's fascinating and complex ways of dealing with transitivity.”<o:p></o:p></SPAN></TT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><TT><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-font-size: 11.0pt">Pilar considera o prêmio como um reconhecimento pela qualidade do trabalho que os linguistas sul-americanos e latino-americanos em geral vêm desenvolvendo, no sentido de se descrever, analisar e documentar as línguas das Américas. Ela também considera este prêmio como um reconhecimento pelo trabalho das mulheres sul-americanas nesta área.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></TT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><TT><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-font-size: 11.0pt">Nos últimos quatro ciclos do Mary R. Haas Award, três prêmios foram concedidos, todos a linguistas latino-americanos: Sérgio Meira, do Brasil, recebeu o prêmio em 2000 pela sua “Tiriyó Grammar” (Rice University); Roberto Zavala, do México, em 2001, pela tese “Inversion and other topics in the grammar of Olutec” (University of Oregon); aparentemente não houve ganhadores em 2002; e finalmente, Pilar Valenzuela, do Peru, recebeu o prêmio em 2003.</SPAN></TT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><TT><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-font-size: 11.0pt">Pilar é a primeira (e, em suas próprias palavras, “certamente não a última”) mulher latino-americana a conquistar o prêmio. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></TT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><TT><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-font-size: 11.0pt">Os membros da comissão julgadora do Mary R. Haas Award 2003 são Leanne Hinton (presidente), George Aaron Broadwell, Jane Hill, Paul Kroeber e Douglas Parks.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </SPAN>A orientadora da tese é a Dra.
