<DIV>>From Leanne Hinton (<A href="mailto:hinton@calmail.berkeley.edu">hinton@calmail.berkeley.edu</A>) 29 Jan 2005:<BR><BR>The Society for Linguistic Anthropology announces two SLA prize<BR>competitions: The Annual Student Essay Prize and the Sapir Book Prize<BR><BR><STRONG>Annual Student Essay Prize</STRONG><BR>--------------------------<BR>The Society for Linguistic Anthropology invites graduate and<BR>undergraduate students to submit a paper on linguistic anthropology.<BR>Graduate student winners will receive $100 and an invitation to<BR>submit their papers for review in the Journal of Linguistic<BR>Anthropology (JLA), and have their names and abstract published in<BR>Anthropology News (AN). An undergraduate prize will also be awarded<BR>if the quality and number of entries merits it. Undergraduates will<BR>receive $100, and will be recognized (along with the faculty member<BR>for whom the paper was written) in AN.<BR><BR>Papers will be judged on originality;
organization, quality, and<BR>clarity of writing; cogency of argument; contributions to theory with<BR>use of empirical materials; and timeliness. Papers should be no more<BR>than 45 double-spaced pages, including bibliography, and should be<BR>written using the JLA style sheet. Papers that have been submitted<BR>for publication, but have yet to be accepted are eligible. Articles<BR>already accepted or published are not eligible. Limit one submission<BR>per student. Applicants need not be members of the SLA to apply.<BR>Prizes will be announced at the SLA business meeting at the AAA<BR>Annual Meeting. Send four copies of the manuscript to Leanne Hinton,<BR>Dept. of Linguistics, 1203 Dwinelle Hall, University of California,<BR>Berkeley, CA 94720-2650. Be sure to include a cover letter with<BR>submission that includes mailing address, telephone number, email<BR>address and institutional affiliation, and specify whether it is a<BR>graduate or
undergraduate submission. The first page of each paper<BR>should specify paper title, but should not include author's name.<BR>Faxed and e-mailed submissions will not be accepted.<BR><BR>Deadline for submission is <FONT color=#ff0000>March 15, 2005</FONT>.<BR><BR><STRONG>Edward Sapir Prize<BR></STRONG>------------------<BR>The Edward Sapir Book Prize was established in 2001 and is awarded<BR>in alternate years to a book that makes the most significant<BR>contribution to our understanding of language in society, or the ways<BR>in which language mediates historical or contemporary sociocultural<BR>processes. The SLA invites books with conceptual and theoretical<BR>focus, as well as ethnographic and descriptive works. Single-or<BR>multi-author books -- but not edited collections -- are eligible.<BR>Books published in the last three years are eligible. Self nominations<BR>are encouraged. Authors or nominators should send a substantive letter<BR>of
nomination and published reviews, if available, as well as a copy<BR>of the book to Leanne Hinton, Dept. of Linguistics, 1203 Dwinelle<BR>Hall, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-2650, before<BR><FONT color=#ff0000>December 31, 2005</FONT>. Authors may also request that the publisher send a copy of the<BR>book. A committee designated by the president of the SLA will evaluate<BR>all submissions and choose prizewinners. Winners will be announced and<BR>prizes will be awarded at the SLA Business Meeting during the 2006 AAA<BR>Annual Meeting.<BR><BR>Last year the prize went to Robert Bringhurst for his 3-volume opus,<BR>_Masterworks of the Haida Story-Tellers_, and was also presented<BR>posthumously to Ghandl and Skye, the two story-tellers on whom the<BR>volumes were based. Honorable mention also went to Dennis Tedlock<BR>for his book _Rabinal Achi: a Mayan drama of war and sacrifice_.<BR><BR><BR></DIV></DIV><BR><BR><DIV>
