<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify;"><o><FONT face="Times New Roman" size="3"> </FONT></o>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify;"><FONT size="3"><FONT face="Times New Roman">En un documento de posesión de tierras en el actual departamento de Guachipas (Suroeste de la provincia de Salta, Argentina), firmado el 21 de octubre de 1616 por un vecino de la ciudad de Salta llamado Matías de Lerma, se traducen dos topónimos de un innominado idioma indígena. Según ese texto (reproducido, p. ej., por Zorreguieta 2008: 413-4), durante el acto de posesión de tierra se tradujo ambos nombres de lugares “…por interpretacion de un indio practico de ellas [seguramente este <I>ellas</I> se refiere a dos lenguas, la nativa del lugar y la general, en este caso el Quechua], que dijo llamarse las dichas tierras <B><I>oma sacopo</I></B> en su lengua, y en la nuestra castellana quiere decir <I>el seno de
las Pi</I>[<I>r</I>]<I>guas del Sol</I>, y que el Rio principal que han en las dichas tierras se llama Rio <B><I>mep</I></B>, que quiere decir (<I>Rio del Anta</I>)…” Un documento muy posterior, del año 1876, citado en Santoni y Ximena [1997], ofrece algunos datos adicionales <SPAN>“Pirguas del Sol, al Sud del departamento Guachipas, en la elevada cumbre de la serranía que divide el territorio de Guachipas de los Valles Calchaquíes y donde forma parte su vertiente el río de <st1>la Anta</st1>, existe una altura que se denomina por los indígenas de esos lugares <I>El Seno del Sol</I>, <I>Pirgua del
Sol</I>, nombre alusivo a ser dicha altura el primer punto que en dicha serranía toca el sol en su nacimiento y ocaso; este lugar era un adoratorio de las tribus Guachipas que se extendían hasta Colalao y Abra de Tafí”.</SPAN></FONT></FONT>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" size="3">En ninguna parte se aclara a qué lengua pertenecerían los topónimos originales, pero los mismos no pertenecen a lenguas conocidas como el Quechua, el Aimara o el Atacameño. <SPAN> </SPAN>Todo sugiere que se trata de la lengua de los Guachipas. </FONT>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" size="3">De acuerdo a la traducción proporcionada para el primero de los topónimos, el nombre <SPAN> </SPAN>para ‘anta’ (es decir, ‘tapir’) en esta presunta lengua Guachipa habría sido <B><I>mep</I></B>. La posible interpretació<wbr>n de <B><I>oma sacopo</I></B> es mucho más complicada. Pareciera (sobre todo por el segundo texto transcripto) que en la traducción se usa <I>seno</I> y <I>pirgua</I> como sinónimos, y ambos términos tienen varios significados en español; el último solamente existe en variantes regionales del español americano (no pertenece, por ejemplo, a mi propia variedad nativa de español). Santoni (en
Santoni y Ximena 1997) dedujo que el significado aproximado de ‘senos del sol’ o ‘pirguas del sol’ (<B><I>oma sacopo</I></B>)<B> </B>sería algo así como *‘el lugar donde se almacena el sol’. </FONT>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" size="3">Todo lo que se puede agregar sobre estos topónimos resulta, lamentablemente, de carácter altamente especulativo. En el primer topónimo, si la glosa correcta de <B><I>mep</I></B> no es ‘tapir’ sino más bien ‘del tapir’ (Rio <B><I>mep </I></B><I>= </I>‘Río <I>del</I> tapir’), podría tratarse de una forma con incorporación del sufijo de genitivo del Quechua <B><I>–p ~ </I></B><I>-<B>pa</B></I>, es decir, ‘tapir’ sería propiamente *<B><I>me</I></B> (este supuesto sufijo -<B><I>p </I></B>no necesariamente tiene que ser un préstamo del Quechua, ya que se encuentra <B>–<I>pV </I></B>como marca de genitivo también en otras lenguas más o menos cercanas, por ejemplo en aquellas pertenecientes a la familia Lule-Vilela; Lule <B><I>–p</I></B>, Vilela <B><I>–pa</I></B>; Golluscio ms. llamó la atención sobre la semejanza entre estos sufijos Quechua y Lule-Vilela)<wbr>.</FONT>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" size="3">En el segundo caso, parece claro que uno de los dos términos que forman el topónimo debe significar ‘sol’. Si se tratara de una lengua con el orden G-N ese término sería el primero, si la lengua tuviera por el contrario el orden N-G sería el segundo. Ahora bien, si la lengua realmente tenía sufijos de caso, como se acaba de sugerir, podría ser tentador identificar al final <B>-<I>po</I> </B>como una variante del presunto sufijo <B><I>-p</I> </B>de <B><I>mep</I> </B>y suponer que <B><I>sacopo</I></B> habría significado ‘del sol’.</FONT>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" size="3">Se sabe que los Guachipas eran uno de los muchos grupos (tales como los Hualfines, Amaichas, Quilmes, etc.) que en época histórica estaban confederados bajo el nombre común de Diaguitas o Calchaquíes. Parece posible, entonces, que los dos topónimos considerados pertenezcan a la lengua que se atribuye a los Diaguitas, es decir, el Kakán. Pero en ninguno de los centenares de topónimos que con seguridad pertenecen al Kakán (todos los del Noroeste argentino terminados en –<B><I>gasta</I></B>, <B><I>-ao</I></B>, etc.) se percibe nada que sugiera un sufijo de genitivo *<B><I>–p(V)</I></B>. La lengua de los Guachipas podría ser, entonces, o un
dialecto altamente diferenciado del Kakán, o una lengua completamente distinta. En este último, existirían al menos un par de indicios para considerar que el Guachipa habría sido una lengua perteneciente a la familia Lule-Vilela: (1) el aparente sufijo de genitivo mencionado, que tiene correlatos en Lule y Vilela, y (2) la semejanza entre <B><I>me-</I></B><I> </I>y Vilela (Balmori 1998: 175) <B><I>mo</I>- </B>‘tapir’.</FONT>
