<p><font color="#000099"><font face="tahoma,sans-serif">Dear Eduardo,<br>In chiquitano, an isolated or possibly macro-gê language of Bolivia, [paIs] means <i>women</i>, or <i>breast</i>. It can also mean <i>priest</i>, I guess because of the 'dresses' they wear, and the feminine mood they used to express themselves (chiquitano is a language where there is a distinction between masculine and feminine mood, depending on the gender of the speaker).<br>
<br>In [paIs] the 'I' is the high central unrounded vowel, and 's' is the retroflex unvoiced fricative (in the dialect of Lomerìo) (personal data)<br><br>I don't have the word "chief" in my corpus, but Geleote Tormo says : [yIriabus]<br>

A palavra paí [pa'i] em Tupinambá, segundo Lemos Barbosa (1956:429), atribuía-se a "homens de respeito: principais, feiticeiros, sacerdotes, parentes mais velhos, etc.".<br>
<br>
Em outra ocasião, discuti aqui na lista a possibilidade de que a palavra para "chefe" encontrada em línguas Jê do Norte e do Sul (<a href="http://tr.im/chefe" target="_blank">http://tr.im/<wbr>chefe</a>) tivesse a mesma origem que a palavra Tupinambá.<br>

Continuando minha investigação de empréstimos Tupí em línguas Macro-Jê, encontro em línguas da família Kamakã (Martius 1867: 157, 155) palavras para 'homem branco' que, talvez, poderiam ter a mesma origem:<br>
<br>
Cotoxó hoa y [hwa'i] 'homo albus; dominus'<br>
Meniens paï 'homo albus'<br>
<br>
Alguém teria exemplos de línguas em que esta palavra Tupí teria sido emprestada com este significado? Ou alguma língua Tupí-Guaraní em que um cognato de pa'i tenha assumido este significado?<br>
