<P class="MsoNormal"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt;">Tengo la impresión de que el trabajo de un "British sea captain" en el que se haría tal comparación sería el de Fitz-Roy (1839). Sin embargo, en ninguno en los vocabularios recogidos por este autor encuentro un término <B><I>kialu </I></B>(o similar) con el significado ‘canoa’, ‘bote’, o algo parecido. <o></o></SPAN>
<P class="MsoNormal"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt;">En realidad (hasta donde alcanza mi conocimiento) esta forma está registrada sólo en Alakaluf Central (o sea, en el Alakaluf de la región del Estrecho de Magallanes) y por un único autor, Skottsberg (1913): <B><I>kia·lu </I></B>(con otros diacríticos que omito aquí)<B><I> </I></B>‘canoe’. <o></o></SPAN>
<P class="MsoNormal"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt;">Por lo tanto, es posible que haya un error en el artículo en la atribución de esta comparación polinesia-patagónica a un autor que publicó en 1839. <o></o></SPAN>
<P class="MsoNormal"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt;">Por otra parte, al no estar corroborada por ningún otro autor (no figura p. ej. en Borgatello 1928, que es la mayor fuente conocida para el Alakaluf Central), <B><I>kia·lu </I></B>resulta una forma dudosa: Skottsberg pudo haberse equivocado, en este caso, sea en la transcripción o en la glosa (o en ambas a ala vez). Razón por la cual no me parece que sea una palabra adecuada para establecer una comparación con ninguna otra lengua, ni de la Polinesia ni de ninguna otra parte del mundo. <o></o></SPAN>

<P class="MsoNormal"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt;">En la página 1346 del mismo artículo se menciona una semejanza entre un término Polinesio y otro Mapudungun: “Both play a game similar to field hockey, <B><I>pai pai</I></B> in the Austral Islands and <B><I>palin </I></B>in Mapuche”. <o></o></SPAN>
<P class="MsoNormal"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt;">Pero juegos de pelota parecidos al hockey sobre césped existen (o existieron) entre otros muchos grupos aborígenes sudamericanos, y en algunas de sus lenguas está documentado un término de forma <B><I>pVl</I>…-</B> <B><I><SPAN> </SPAN></I></B>para designar a la pelota o al juego de este tipo: Gününa Yajüch <B><I>balta</I></B>, Ñachilamolé’k <B><I>polké</I></B>, además de Mapudungun <STRONG><EM>pali. </EM></STRONG>Formas que podrían ser de origen nomatopéyico, cf.
