<P class="MsoNormal"><FONT size="3" face="Times New Roman">En lo que respecta a la plausibilidad de eventuales préstamos léxicos desde lenguas Polinesias hacia lenguas indígenas americanas, creo que existen algunas diferencias muy significativas entre el sur de California, por una parte, y los canales magallánicos, por otra. Estas diferencias hacen que resulte mucho más plausible que tales préstamos puedan haber ocurrido efectivamente en la costa sur californiana, y que no sea plausible que hayan ocurrido en el extremo austral sudamericano.</FONT>
<P class="MsoNormal"><o><FONT size="3" face="Times New Roman"> </FONT></o>
<P class="MsoNormal"><FONT size="3" face="Times New Roman">En California el desarrollo de canoas de planchas cosidas parece ser relativamente reciente. Habría ocurrido solamente entre los Chusmash centrales e isleños (no entre los Chumash norteños, al parecer) y entre los hablantes de una lengua Uto-Azteca, el Gabrieleño. En ambos casos, el desarrollo de una cultura canoera marítima sería más reciente que el proceso de expansión marítima hacia el este de los Polinesios. Por otra parte, habría evidencia arqueológica de la llegada de navegantes polinesios a las costas del sur de California. Finalmente, Karhryn Klar es una de las más importantes especialistas en Chumash, con muy buenos conocimientos de lingüística histórico-comparativa. Sus comparaciones son muy serias, sus aseveraciones son extremadamente cuidadosas, y sus conclusiones sobre <B><I>posibles</I></B> préstamos léxicos del Polinesio al Chumash y al Gabrieleño resultan por todo ello dignas de consideración.</FONT>
<P class="MsoNormal"><o><FONT size="3" face="Times New Roman"> </FONT></o>
<P class="MsoNormal"><FONT size="3" face="Times New Roman">El complejo cultural de los canoeros del extremo sur sudamericano, en cambio, se ha venido desarrollando desde hace varios milenios, y es sin duda muy anterior a la expansión oceánica de los Polinesios. Si ocurrió alguna vez algún fortuito contacto de algún solitario navegante Polinesio perdido en las frías aguas del Pacífico Sur con los antepasados de los Yagan o de los Alakaluf, ese hipotético encuentro tendría que haberse producido hace menos de mil años. Por esa época los canoeros marítimos del extremo sur ya estaban culturalmente adaptados culturalmente a su medio de manera perfecta, y no habrían tenido la menor necesidad de tomar en préstamo denominaciones de embarcaciones de otras lenguas. Y hasta el momento no conozco ningún trabajo arqueológico en el que se planteen posibles evidencias arqueológicas de un eventual contacto entre los Polinesios y
los Alakaluf o los Yagan.</FONT>
<P class="MsoNormal"><o><FONT size="3" face="Times New Roman"> </FONT></o>
<P class="MsoNormal"><FONT size="3" face="Times New Roman">Las comparaciones léxicas Polinesio-Yagan, Chumash-Yagan y Gabrieleño-Yagan parecen ser problemáticas a niveles fonológico, morfológico y/o semántico. En el caso de Yagan <B><I>vwa:g</I>- </B>y Chumash <B>*<I>swax</I></B> habría que explicar, por ejemplo, por qué razón se habría perdido una <B><I>*s-</I></B> inicial en Yagan (cuando es un fonema permitido en esa posición), o bien cómo se habría desarrollado ese fonema inicial en Chumash.<SPAN> </SPAN>En el caso de Yagan <B><I>te:atel </I></B>y Polinesio <B><I>*tia</I></B> ‘sew’, Grabrieleño <B><I>ti’at </I></B>no queda claro cuál sería el origen del final Yagan -<B><I>tel </I></B>o <B><I>–el</I>. </B>Una comparación de las formas Polinesia y Gabrieleña con Yagan <B><I>ata</I></B> exigiría, por otra parte, alguna explicación de la diferencia semántica entre ‘sew’ y ‘community of people to emigrate by water’. Antes de comparar Yagan <B><I>chvpahr </I></B>con Chumash <B><I>tomolo </I></B>invocando la alternancia
Yagan <B><I>m </I></B>vs. <B><I>p</I></B>, sería interesante saber cuál es el origen de esa poco frecuente alternancia. En fin, antes de comparar Yagan <B><I>a:lu: </I></B>con Polinesio <B><I>kialoa </I></B>habría que identificar –en mi opinión- el segmento iniciar <B><I>ki- </I></B>de esta última forma; o bien explicar cómo y por qué se habría perdido ese comienzo en Yagan.</FONT>
<P class="MsoNormal"><o><FONT size="3" face="Times New Roman"> </FONT></o>
<P class="MsoNormal"><FONT size="3" face="Times New Roman">Con lo anterior no estoy negando la posibilidad de que hayan quedado <SPAN> </SPAN>restos lingüísticos de antiguos contactos transpacíficos precolombinos en Sudamérica. Por el contrario, la difusión en Polinesia y en algunos dialectos del Quechua de una forma <B><I>kumara</I></B> (o variantes) ‘batata’, por ejemplo, me sigue pareciendo un hecho altamente sugestivo.</FONT>

I've read that hese canoes were made of planks, as opposed to the bark canoes of the Yahgans. On the other hand Chumashan *swax.<BR><BR>A Yahgan term for an old or worn out canoe is te:atel, compare with various *tia 'sew' and Gabrielen~o ti'at. In addition, a great variety of Yahgan words dealing with lines, ropes, filaments, and sewing, etc. can be
internally reconstructed as containing a morpheme *i: More curiously, the Yahgan term for a community of people to emigrate by water is ata. <BR><BR>While in the eastern areas the generic term for 'canoe' is a:nan, in the south (towards Cape Horn) the general term was chvpahr (hr is a fricative derived from /d/ or /t/). Compare to tomolh.
