Structure dependence in grammar can (if we choose to look at it with
an open mind) be viewed as a language-specific instantiation of some
very general principles of part-whole relationships and object
constancy that permeate all of perception, cognition and motor
planning.  From that point of view, it is perhaps less surprising
that children come into language development biased to acquire
mappings that preserve structure dependence. -liz bates
