I have finally sorted out a problem that was preventing me from posting
to FUNKNET. I wanted to join the ranks of those who find 'are'
grammatical and 'do' ungrammatical in the 'if you ___' slot. I can,
however, like totally see how someone would find 'do' grammatical.

And since when does a verb (viz., 'be') have to be in either one category
or another? One of the major points of cognitivist linguistics is that
category membership is not .. well, categorical!
