                       RICE UNIVERSITY
                       Houston, Texas
                       March 14-16, 2002

This symposium brings together researchers who investigate the
knowledge systems that are involved in the speech perception process, and
how these systems interact. Although they are from a variety of different
fields, they share in interest in examining speech perception as a
phenomenon that moves beyond acoustic pattern matching, and instead appeal
to the entire range of cognitive systems involved in perceiving speech in
natural contexts.
