I'd like to second the suggestion of the John Benjamins text by Renkema; I
think it's very good. Much of my time goes into trying to make basic
concepts of linguistics clear to non-linguists, and the Renkema book is the
one I always recommend. It's clear, it's nontechnical,  and it's
interesting to read.
