Message-ID: Am wondering if anyone here can help me with either of the following: 1. I am quite certain that somewhere, probably in the pages of Varro but perhaps in Quintilian, I have come across something like the following statement: _People give names to things according to their importance to them. Thus, since chickens are important to humans, we find a word for the female chicken, hen, and the male, rooster. But crows are unimportant to us, hence we Romans have only one word, cornix, covering both the male and the female._ Though I have searched through Varro at least twice, I have somehow misplaced the precise place where this notion is expressed. Can anyone tell me where it can be found? 2. I am also certain that I have a file somewhere on my computer, downloaded from the web, providing statistics for the number of linguistics professors and instructors working in our universities every ten years or so over the last 50 to 70 years. Can anyone tell me where I can find that file again? Or failing that, another source for this information? PROGRAM The preliminary program of the symposium as well as the abstracts for the section papers are now available on the conference website at http://www.ling.helsinki.fi/sky/tapahtumat/manner/index.shtml The program also includes the workshop "Formal approaches to language as a cognitive system" organized by Urpo Nikanne (Åbo Akademi, Finland) and Mila Vulchanova (NTNU, Norway). The detailed program will be available at the conference website in August. Below is a short description of the workshop. There are several cognitively oriented approaches in linguistics. Some of them (Conceptual Semantics, Sign-theory, Construction Grammar, etc.) are based on formalization in their theory building and treating language as a part of an integrated theory of mind. The workshop concentrates on finding possible topics and research areas in which these theories are ready to make a break-through in near future. The participants of the workshop include: Mila Vulchanova (NTNU, Norway), Matthias Weissgerber (Konstanz, Germany), Urpo Nikanne (Åbo Akademi University, Finland), Liliana Martinez (NTNU, Norway), Geda Paulsen (Åbo Akademi University, Finland), Oksana Petrova (Åbo Akademi University, Finland), Michaela Pörn (Åbo Akademi, Finland), and Esa Itkonen (University of Turku, Finland). We invite linguists who take a functional and/or cognitive perspective in describing and explaining linguistic phenomena in the language(s) they are researching and those working on language dynamics from a functional or cognitive perspective to participate. We especially encourage linguists working on the Uralic languages to submit papers, in the hope of expanding the Cognitive Linguistic paradigm with data from these languages; researchers involved with other languages and language families are, of course, also most welcome. We also encourage papers on grammaticalization and those looking at the role of oral and written forms, or different language varieties, in language change, as well as changes in grammar resulting from language contact. Furthermore, presentations dealing with different usage-based models, including construction grammar, are also welcome. This conference aims to provide a forum for presenting research in Japanese and Korean linguistics, thereby facilitating efforts to deepen our understanding of these two languages, which have striking typological similarities. This year in addition to the general session, two workshops with guest speakers are scheduled during the conference. Papers in all sub-areas of Japanese and Korean linguistics are invited. Presentations will be 20 minutes long and will be followed by a 10-minute question and answer period. Please submit abstracts (one page, 500 words maximum) as a PDF file attached to an email message to JK17 at humnet.ucla.edu by July 15, 2007 (Please note this new deadline). You may use a second page for references and/or example sentences. The first line of your abstract should indicate the category (Formal or Functional), followed by the sub-field (e.g., Formal/Syntax, Functional/Discourse, etc.). The second line should be the paper title, followed by the number of words used on the first page of the abstract, excluding the first two lines with the category, the sub-field, and the paper title (e.g., Title (492)). The symposium will take place at the University of Tampere (Tampere, Finland) in the Pinni B -building. The street address is Kanslerinrinne 1. The campus map can be found in the internet at http://www.uta.fi/kuvat/yliopisto_paakampus_1105_FIN.pdf In the map, B-building's entrance is marked with a red arrow between the A- and B- buildings near number 3 and the information desk. PROGRAM The preliminary program of the symposium as well as the abstracts for the section papers are now available on the conference website at http://www.ling.helsinki.fi/sky/tapahtumat/manner/index.shtml The program also includes the workshop "Formal approaches to language as a cognitive system" organized by Urpo Nikanne (?bo Akademi, Finland) and Mila Vulchanova (NTNU, Norway). Message-ID: Thanks to remarkable new advances in electronic imaging techniques, combining MRI, CAT, and ultrasound approaches, it is now possible to provide an accurate image of the inside of the mind of a mainstream linguist. You can view this image right now by going to: http://language.home.sprynet.com/lingdex/lingview.htm So strikingly accurate is this image that mainstream linguists themselves may find it useful as a guide to their remarkable field of study.
