Discrete Infinity

Dan,

I wasn't arguing in favor of infinity. I agree there is no such thing in
language. I also agree that there are processing limitations that place an
upper bound on sentence length.

My point is something quite different. It's that someone can use an
existing language to say something unexpected. This is immensely
important, despite the fact that it very rarely happens.

The statistical approach, with its emphasis on the average person, ignores
the most important aspect of human language: that it leaves us free to
express new ideas.
