Hi Fritz,
The grammaticalization of 'maybe' is discussed in Olga Fischer's book 'Morphosyntactic change. Functional and formal perspectives' (OUP, 2007), in Chapter 6.
And there could be something in Toril Swan's book 'Sentence adverbials in English: a synchronic and diachronic investigation' (Novus Verlag, 1988) as well, though I am not sure.
Best regards,
Freek.

Can anybody point me to a literature reference on the grammaticalization of 'may be' to 'maybe' in the history of English?

Thanks,

Fritz
