This isn't an answer to Ron's fine and thoughtful question, but I'm wondering
if I'm right in assuming that object initial order in English is highly
thematic, highly marked. <i>Her husband, I like; her, I can't stand.</i>
This example also moves the verb phrases into clause ending
prominence. The highly given pronoun subjects are diminished.
Am I on track?
