Title: language and gender

Three Key Words: women, gender, language, movie

Description (no more than 300 words)

Language is believed to form behavior, and the way we feel and think. It is also seen as an instrument capable of shaping our ideology as well as changing social reality. It seems, therefore, necessary to make people aware of what language can do in defining people and their status in a community. The present study has taken a Critical Discourse Analysis approach and tried to show gender inequalities as depicted in the Persian Movie, called Shokaran. Movies, in general, are thought to be a good reflection of a society and its culture. And movie producers, usually try to show aspects of life as close to natural life as possible. The language used in movies, just as that used in real life communication, both reflect and construct ideologies related to gender, among others, which are prevalent in the community. It can show some deep-seated cognitive difference and reflects the sexual power dynamics in language use. By studying the differences and the way in which they arise, we can arrive at an understanding of how language relates to gender. In addition to reflecting these differences, language is very active in making stereotypes. In this connection, the movie, Shokaran, depicts two types of women. One, a good wife and the other, a nurse who is single. Both, despite their status differences, have to take care of their family. The former, takes care of her husband, brother-in-law and children and the latter takes care of her father. Regarding the nurse, although she is financially independent, or it is better to say, her father is financially dependent on her, she is, still, under the control of her father. Her father emphasizes that she has to marry, since a single woman is worth nothing. The stereotype, made throughout the movie, shows the first woman, the wife, the obedient and passive woman, as the ideal one, while the single nurse, as an exotic woman. And this negative impression of the camera is transferred to the spectator.
