the unenclosed version:

Minutes of IGALA E-meeting (August-September 2000) and update.
Participating:
Executive Committee: Penny Eckert, Sally McConnell-Ginet, Vicky Bergvall,
Sara Trechter
Advisory Council: Mary Bucholtz, Kira Hall, Anna Livia, Bonnie McElhinny,
Ingrid Piller, Yukako Sunaoshi

1. Journal and Communications. The feasibility of a journal for language
and gender was addressed again. The advantages and disadvantages of
electronic versus paper journals were discussed: 1) Hard copy potentially
has more prestige for the authors and respect for the journal 2) electronic
journals allow for greater international accessibility. 3) A combination of
both, electronic for working papers and with the hard copy coming out less
often. 4) Recommended also were different journal formats with the inclusion
of more than the typical academic article (teaching, reviews of films,
reviews of articles in related disciplines, etc). There was a
recommendation to form a communications committee to consider communications
as a part of a strategy to (a) create an intellectual community, (b) get
ideas out in a visible place, and (c) create status for the field. It would
also consider the journal question in detail. The committee members are
(EC/AC members Victoria Bergvall, Penny Eckert, Mary Bucholtz, Ingrid
Piller, Anna Livia, and IGALA members Sara Mills and Jane Sunderland).

2. Conference. After discussion the combined committees decided to hold the
conference bi-annually. In an effort to reach an international audience,
the next conference (2002) will be held outside of the United States. The
2002 conference will be held at the University of Lancaster, UK and the 2004
conference is tentatively scheduled for Cornell University, US.

3. Advisory Council Appointments. In its appointments, IGALA tried to
address concerns about the need for increased internationality in
organization leadership. Discussion also favored appointments to the slots
(when possible) to people who have careers outside of academy because they
could potentially bring more diverse experience and representation to the
organization. The appointments to the Advisory Council are:

Student Catherine Sangster (Oxford University)
Queer/sexuality in langauge Birch Moonwomon Baird(California State
University, Sonoma)
Outside of academy representative (Suzette Haden Elgin, linguist and
author of Native Tongue, etc.)
Feminist Fatima Sadiqi (University of Fes, Morocco)
Minority Language Rep.	Barbara LeMaster (California State University, Long
Beach)
Outside of US, UK, etc	as yet unfilled (potential candidates asked to

of the graduate students at Stanford and Suzanne Wertheim at Berkeley.
Devyani Sharma and Penny Eckert are constructing an IGALA webpage at
Stanford.

Until it is up and running send orders for previous BWLC proceedings to
igla at csli.stanford.edu <mailto:igla at csli.stanford.edu> or mail to: IGLA,

and transition from the Berkeley Women and Language Group to IGALA,
respectively.
