International Conference on Media Communication
Theme: Media in a fast Changing World
Date: May 7-9, 2009.
Venue: Hard Rock Hotel, Kuta, Bali, Indonesia.
Media in todays’ world has undoubtedly become a significant part of
human everyday life. There have been many complex and varied stories
how our world is changing faster and faster as a result of the media
forces around us. The world is witnessing the freer and faster flow of
contemporary media practices. This has been taken by people as
encouraging creativities and empowering and influential. It has
offered great contribution in promoting world businesses, political
agendas, various popular cultures as well as individual performances,
which bring about huge and important changes in societies. In this
globalized world, media has a breakthrough in the nexus of various
human cultures. This includes the fact that media has simultaneously
challenged us in looking at how the changes have made us be controlled
by the media instead of we, controlling the media. We need to see the
world of media with a more critical mind, which could prevent us from
becoming the helpless and hopeless victims of the changes.
Petra Christian University as an academic institution wants to take
the intiative of gathering scholars, intellectuals, students, and
media practitioners to discuss what and how media can work in our
lives, as well as to see how we can face them with more critical mind
in order to be able to see how the changes caused by media could work
for the well-being of humankind and the world. Four social studies
departments, namely, English Department, Department of Communication,
Department of Visual Communication Design, and Department of Business
Marketing will take part in conducting the International Conference
on Media. Each discipline will look at media practices from their
point of view, but can see the problem being discussed as our very own
problem as well. Hence, it may also reveal the present need of an
interdisplinary study and the interelatedness of sciences. Due to the
importance of the issues on media and what people can learn from the
keynote speakers and the paper presentations in the conference, we are
challenged to participate in this very unique and important conference.
The following sub-themes are recommended paper topics :
