Subject: IGALA Book Prize Winner

Dear IGALA members,

I am happy to announce that the winner of the International Gender and Language Association Book prize for 2010 is:

Ros Gill’s book: Gender and the Media, Polity.

Some extracts from reviews of the book by IGALA members:

The book contains `broad yet detailed coverage of the field of gender and media studies’ and also constitutes `a contribution to the theorisation of post feminism and its relationship to representations of gender in contemporary media through original critical analyses of a variety of media forms.’
`The clarity and accessibility of Gill’s writing combined with her wide-ranging yet detailed review of the key theories and debates provides a thorough overview of the central issues and concerns in gender and media studies.’ `The result of Gill’s studies is a clear but disturbing demonstration of the ways in which contemporary media representations are constructed in a manner that stitches together feminist and anti-feminist ideas and notions of the neo-liberal subject, incorporating ideas of empowerment, autonomy, the reassertion of sexual difference, self-surveillance and expressions of contemporary sexism’. `It is the most comprehensive book on post feminism I have read: it offers practical tools to analyse post feminism as a sensibility rather than as a historical turn, epistemological break or simple backlash.’ `All gender and language researchers would benefit from reading this book’.

Best wishes
Sara Mills
