Title: Diverse genders, mobile sexualities: Transnational articulations of youth identity

Panel description: As Bucholtz & Skapoulli (2009) note, youth language is increasingly mobile and diverse, traversing national and cultural boundaries to produce fused and re-signified identities. This panel explores gender and sexual identity among youth across multiple scales, between and at the intersection of the local and global. Papers focus on interactional contexts where youth negotiate gender and sexuality to express, understand, and transform their environment, including how youth tie their gender and sexuality to place, policy, and ideology. Paper topics highlight youth language in multilingual contexts, youth expressions of gender and sexuality in the reinterpretation of global discourses, how youth identities are situated across multiple spaces, and youth engagement with political and educational processes through gender and sexuality (Berg, 2012; Bucholtz & Skapoulli, 2009; King & De Fina, 2010; Liddicoat, 2009; Nelson, 2011).

Organizers: Lyn Fogle & Cala Zubair
Discussant: Elaine Chun, University of South Carolina
