LAST CALL FOR PAPERS

The 12th BAAL Language, Gender and Sexuality Special Interest Group meeting will be held at Birmingham City University on Thursday 30th May 2019. The theme for the event is the intersection of language, media and technology, including work focused on traditional media (radio, television, film, print, music), new media (online forums, social network sites, etc), chat applications (WhatsApp, SnapChat, etc), digital activism (including how gender-based issues such as #gamergate, #metoo, and #everydaysexism, are represented in the media), and video games, as well inter-/cross-disciplinary linguistic research with communication and media studies, journalism, the digital humanities, and the media industry and tech sector more broadly.

Call for Papers

The call for papers seeks submissions from scholars and researchers at all career stages. Preliminary/early-stage research will be considered, provided findings (however tentative) are included. Papers will be limited to 20 minutes + five minutes for questions (25 minutes in total). Submissions related to the following broad themes are particularly welcome:


  *   Linguistic representations of gender and sexuality in print, television and radio;
  *   Language, gender and sexuality in new media forms;
  *   New methods in investigating language and gender in online contexts;
  *   Language and gender in video games;
  *   Digital activism and gender;
  *   Linguistic ethnography in the technology and media industries;
  *   Multimodal approaches in language, gender and sexuality.

Abstracts (300 words, inclusive of title and references) should be submitted in .doc or .docx format to the event organiser -robert.lawson at bcu.ac.uk<mailto:robert.lawson at bcu.ac.uk>.


  *   Deadline for abstracts: Monday 25th February 2019
  *   Confirmation of acceptance: Friday 11th March 2019
