(Six were awarded, of which<BR>two were allocated in<BR><BR> 2006-7.)<BR><BR> We welcome applicants from the UK and the EU in all<BR>ESRC-relevant areas of linguistics and applied linguistics, but<BR>especially the following areas where supervisors currently have<BR>vacancies:<BR><BR> . sociolinguistics (especially sociophonetics, language<BR>variation, bilingualism, language and gender, language policy,<BR>intercultural pragmatics)<BR><BR> . (critical) discourse analysis<BR> . corpus linguistics (with a sociolinguistic approach)<BR><BR> +3 awards are available for the PhD by Research Only. Applicants<BR>should hold an ESRC-recognised Masters in Linguistics or Applied<BR>Linguistics.<BR><BR> 1+3 awards are available for those applying for the PhD by<BR>Thesis and Coursework, a part-time or full-time degree which is awarded<BR>on the basis of taught courses as well as a thesis.
