Geddes
Tuesday 11th November 2008, 17:30 - 19:30
The Women’s Library, Old Castle Street, London E1 7NT

Louisa Garrett Anderson, daughter of Britain’s first woman doctor,
founded a hospital for women and children and went to prison for her
activities with the militant suffrage movement. During WWI she was Chief
Surgeon at the Endell Street Military Hospital, a large woman-run army
hospital in Covent Garden, where at the same time as treating casualties,
the staff campaigned for the vote throughout the war. Jennian Geddes will
talk about the history of the suffragette hospital - the seminar will
also reflect on contemporary issues concerning women, health and war.

Jennian Geddes is a former Reader in Clinical Neuropathology at
Queen Mary, University of London & is Honorary Consultant
Neuropathologist at the Royal London. She is currently researching the
history of early women doctors.
