The position is a joint appointment in Communication<br>Studies (60%) and Women’s and Gender Studies (40%), with the tenure home<br>residing in Communication Studies. We are seeking a scholar specializing in<br>critical approaches to rhetoric, civic discourse, identity, and difference<br>within public culture. In Communication Studies, instructional<br>responsibilities will include courses in gender communication, cultural<br>criticism, methods in rhetorical history, and courses in the general<br>education program. The successful applicant will be asked to strengthen the<br>department’s interdisciplinary ties, especially with feminist scholars in<br>allied disciplines. In Women’s and Gender Studies, responsibilities<br>include appointment as a Core Faculty member and teaching and supervising<br>the introductory course. Applicants must be able to conduct an active<br>program of research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, advise<br>graduate students, and provide professional service.<br><br> <br><br>Qualifications:<br><br> <br><br>Candidates must have a Ph.D. in communication studies with a clear emphasis<br>in rhetorical studies; a doctoral certificate in women’s and gender studies<br>is preferred. The qualified candidate will have a strong background in the<br>history of women’s public address and the rhetoric of social movements,<br>with a teaching and research focus on the role of historically marginalized<br>groups in civic life.<br><br> <br><br>Department/Program:<br><br> <br><br>The Department of Communication Studies has a long tradition of excellence<br>in research, teaching, and service. The successful candidate will join a<br>faculty offering a full range of courses in interpersonal and family<br>communication, organizational communication, and rhetoric and public<br>culture. The department enrolls 2,000 students per semester in graduate<br>and undergraduate courses, including 225 majors earning the B.A./B.S.<br>degree. The department offers a Ph.D. and M.A. in communication studies,<br>funding 18-20 graduate students each year. It also participates in an<br>interdisciplinary masters degree with the Departments of Marketing and<br>Advertising. <br><br> <br><br>Women’s and Gender Studies is a multidisciplinary program within the<br>College of Arts & Sciences offering a well-established undergraduate major<br>and minor, graduate specialization and minor. The program has strategic<br>priorities in LGBTQ/Sexuality Studies, Transnational Feminism, and Women,<br>Gender & Science. There are 4 jointly-appointed Core Faculty members and<br>over 70 Program Faculty from 6 different colleges who regularly teach 38<br>cross-listed courses in addition to 6 stand-alone courses.<br><br> <br><br>The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is located in the state capital. <br>Lincoln has a population of 250,000 people and enjoys many of the cultural<br>and entertainment benefits of a much larger city, with the feel of a<br>friendly Midwestern community.
