I think this is not þarban "abstain", but it is the Preterite-Present verb
þaurban "need".

lekeis is probably the least confusing form and more correct etymologically,
but this variation in spelling is found. e changes with ei in several words
among different places and writers.

This is not accusative but rather it is the weak nominative. The weak
adjective is used if preceded by the definite/demonstrative article/pronoun
"sa" (of which þai is the plural).
