There is a book about the architecture of the Langobards,
that you might care to take a look at. They built lots
of stone buildings in Italy, and are supposed to have created
their own style. The book has lots of photographs.
In particular attention is payed to the decorative patterns
used by the Langobards in architecture, especially the
kinds of wavy lines that surround frieses and such.

Gothic is supposed to form a third group, that is neither
"Scandinavian" nor "German". It doesn't have to be either
the one or the other. Once you accept the possibility
that there are two groups, there can equally well have been
three.
