Tore,

Well, Joergen Weibull in his _Sveriges historia_
refers to Jordanes: "Sverige - eller raettare
Skandinavien - beskrivs haer (_Getica_) som ett
land bestaaende av ett stort antal stammar, var
och en under sin hoevding eller kung." (p.10).The Ostrogoti
are mentioned already by Jordanes.

In Hoops 2nd ed it is assumed that the Gautoi/Goetar
early stretched from Gautelfr in the West to the eastern
coast of Oestergoetland: "Das Stammesgebiet wird sich...
auf beiden Seiten des Vaettersees wohl von Kueste zur
Kueste erstreckt haben." Professor Andersson expresses
that no doubt Gauthigoth are the Vaestgoetar and the
Ostrogothae the inhabitants of Oestergoetland.

Which is your source that Gautoi should also have lived in Östergötland and
Småland?
The names Götaland, Östergötland and Västergötland are names which appear
very late in the Middle ages.
As far as I can read from the sources the Gautoi lived in Västergötland
with the forrests of Tiveden as border to the Lake Mälar area.
