Dear Bertil,
you do not have to go back to Jakob Grimm to find modern 
literature on the genealogy of the Amali. I would advise you to read

Herwig Wolfram, Die Goten, 3rd ed. Beck, Munich 1990, esp. ch.I 
6, pp.41 ff., "Gotische Königsgeschlechter und ihre Namen",

and

Peter Heather, Cassiodorus and the Rise of the Amals: Genealogy 
and the Goths under Hun Domination. Journal of Roman Studies 79 
(1989) 103-128.
