Osnabrueck was founded at a furt across the river Hase and ossen is
Low German for oxen. Brueck means bridge or furt. So it was either a
furt to drive oxen over the Hase river or to drive Ozni over the Hase
river, I prefer the first version, which is also the accepted version.
Similarly, the Goths have nothing to do with this Gad-person.

The name Ripuari is attested only from the 8th century onwards for the
Rhine Franks, so we don't know if the Romans ever called themselves
"Rippuari". Most authors see the name derived from ripa, i.e. river
bank, so the Ripuari would be the men on the river bank, i.e. Rhine
Franks as opposed to Salian Franks. Other authors suggested that the
name is linked to riparii, a sort of military unit in the Roman army.
This has nothing to do with the Goths, but casts additional doubt on
the assertation that the Goths derive their name from a certain
Gad-person.
