Hi Steve

In fact, Don, as well as Dniester, Dnieper and also Danube, are
regarded by some people as being derived from the same Old Iranic
word: danu- "river".
In this conception, Dnieper comes from Old Iranic *danu-apara "the
river before", and Dniester from *danu-nastya "the river behind" (the
Dnieper is before and the Dniester behind when looking from east to
west, thus from the point of view of the Iranic peoples).
