Not sure where exactly this fits in as I have missed most of the
debate, but take it for what its worth.
And I quote,
"Through the spring and summer 1349, the violence escalated.
In some towns, the massacres took place as the Black Death
raged; in others, the mere news of the plague's approach was
enough to set off pogroms. In spring 1349 the large Jewish
community at Frankfurt-am-Main was destroyed, followed by the
annihilation of those in Mainz and Cologne. Mainz had more then
3000 Jews, probably the largest and wealthiest of all the
northern European jewish communities. They had a long and proud
tradition. When attacked, the Jews rallied and fought back; in
the first battle, over 200 christians were killed. But the
following day, drawing on nearby environs for reinforcements,
the christians stormed the ghetto again and overwhelmed the
defenders. All the jews were killed.
Similar pogroms took place in Brussels, Solothurn, Zofingen,
Stuttgart, Landsberg, Burren, Memmingen, Lindau, Freiburg, Ulm,
Gotha, Eisenach, Dresden, Worms, Baden, Erfurt, and Speyer. At
Speyer, Jewish bodies were loaded into wine casks and floated
down the Rhine. By the end of 1349, most of the violence had
waned in the Rhineland, where the Black Death was beginning to
wind down, but it picked up anew in the Hansa towns of the
Baltic Coast and in much of Eastern Europe, where the effects of
the plague were just beginning to be felt. The overall impact of
what can only be called a holocaust was calamitous. By 1351, 60
major and 150 smaller Jewish communities had been extirpated,
and over 350 separate massacres had taken place. The effect, an
important legacy of the Black Death, was to encourage the
eastward movement of the remaining northern European Jewry to
Poland and Russia, where they remained for close to 600 years.
One of the reasons that surviving Jews moved east was the
protection offered by King Casimir of Poland. It is difficult to
discern why Casimir was so enthusiastic in his welcome of the
Jews and so vigorous in his protection. He had a Jewish mistress
and seemed well-disposed in general to Jews. Perhaps too he was
anxious to have commercial skills which some of the immigrants
could offer, or was just a firm believer in justice."
