The cognates, Sanskrit raaja, Latin rex re:gis, Gaulish riix riig- (seen in
names like Vercingetorix) etc., would seem to indicate a Proto-Indeo-European
form along the lines of *reeg-. Long e does not normally become long i in
Germanic, but it does in Celtic. This is why the word is said to be a
borrowing.
    Note howerver that the borrowing apparently took place before *g > k,
which only stands to reason, because the word is so widespread in Germanic
that it would have to have been borrowed quite early.
