[gothic-l] Gauti, Guti, Goti

Dear listmembers,

It is certainly no coincidence that the names of
peoples living in south Scandinavia (Gauti, Guti)
are linguistically connected. It is just another
link in the chain of arguments for a migration
to the southern coast of the Baltic Sea.

Thorsten Andersson's study in Namn och bygd in
1996 stands unopposed. The tribal designation
goetar is closely related to the designations Goti
gutans, gutar (Gotlanders), which formally correspond to
each other. The first of these words is an a-stem, Proto-
germanic *gautoz, while the others are an-stems,
Protogermanic *gutaniz.
