Dear listmembers,

Have for some time considered to put Marvin Taylors
article in General Lingustics on the etymology of the
Eruli name on the list, at least in part.

This is the first installment.

"This essay is the first part of a survey of the state of
research on the Eruli, a Germanic tribe of the Migration
Period. Little is known about the tribe with certainty;
ethnological and linguistic classification is difficult,
and the accounts of events of Erulian history which do occur
in the sources cannot always be reconciled with each other.
But the Erulians celebrated 'return' to Scandinavia at the
beginning of the sixth century indicates that they could have
played an exceptional role in cultural contact between
northern and southern Europe, and since the tribe has
been an attractive subject for scholarly speculation
in a number of philological and historical disciplines,
an inventory of this research was thought to serve a
useful purpose."

Erulically
