Andreas,

Thank you for informing the list about the
day of death of Stilicho. On the question
of Athawulf I still believe he reached the
position of magister militum from Honorius.
Through the latter Athawulf also received Gaul,
which was lost to Honorius anyway.

Also thank you for filling in dates. Already in 401 AD
Gothic cavalry was in the vicinity of Rome so that
the walls from the times of Marcus Aurelius were
strengthened.

BTW, the battle of Pollentia was on March 19, 402 AD.
Did Attalus marry Gallia Placidia? It seems uncertain
who you are referring, Attalus or Athawulf?

Yes, it is correct that Athawulf was assassinated in
415 AD. It was a private matter, I think. His successor
was Sigerich and then came King Walja, who was the
one who returned Gallia Placidia to Honorius. Walja
reconquered Spain for Honorius and I think
that the Visigoths received Aquitania in exchange for the
reconquest in 419 AD. The result was that Tolosa became
capital of the Visigothic kingdom.

The succession of Visigothic kings between
395- 419 AD

Alarich I

395 to September/October 410 AD

Athawulf

410 - August-September 415 AD

Sigerich

A short period during the fall of 415 AD

Walja 415 - 419 AD

Wishing you a pleasant 2002

Bertil

P.S. Sigerich was, I believe, a Balt and the successor of
Walja was Theoderich I in 419 AD. All this time the Ostrogoths were
under Hunnic rule.

your account is not quite correct. Stilicho was killed on August 22,
A.D.408, not 407. Athaulf never was magister militum. He was for a
short time comes domesticorum equitum under the usurper Attalus
in 409. He married Galla Placidia, who had been captive of the
Visigoths since 410, against the wishes of her brother, the emperor
Honorius, at the beginning of 414 and was killed in the summer of
415. The war ended with a treaty between his second successor
Vallia and the roman general Constantius in 416. Constantius got
back Galla Placidia, married her in 417 and became co-emperor as
Constantius III.
