Andreas kindly provided some biographical notes
on Professor Omeljan Pritsak and his book_The Origin of Rus_.
Maybe it might be of interest to listmembers to know a
little more about the book, which cotains much of interest
for those seeking information on the relation between
Migration Era myths, epics and lays and Old Norse literature.
Of course the main question of this first volume of Proffessor
Pritsak is who the Rus were, where did they come from and
how was the Kievan state founded.

An exposition of the entire work (six volumes) is provided in
the 926 pages first volume. There is also a description of the
cultural setting in the early medieval West and East. Then comes
a detailed analysis of the Scandinavian phase of the problem.
In six detailed sections aspects of Old Scandinavian
intellectual crativity is presented - Eddaic poetry, the poetry of the
Skalds, Runic inscriptions, legal literature, geographic literature,
and chronicles. Perhaps the most important part is the probing
of poetry and myth as a historical source.

The author began with the study of all pertinent source material,
while considering the historiographic background and provenance
of each individual information.
