Hi Håkan ,

Yes, I've visited your site before joining the list when I started to
ask myself on the reason for several gothicalish events I could'nt,
and can't yet, put together.

If you think to visit the tomb I suggest you target the patron feast
, S. Miguel do Fetal, (Saint Michael of the Fernery): September 29th.
Be prepared, both the tomb and the church are quite rustic.
It is not under a dome (see today's message for Dirk).

The kingdom of Leon adjacent to northern Portugal has many common cultural
links. The only other recognized language in Portugal is Mirandes (an
Asturian-Lionese
language), for exemple. It is spoken around Miranda do Douro.

Regarding the whirls it is a frequent piece seen in medieval stones and
later ones.
I've seen them as far as in S. Miguel Island, Azores, last year.
Also remember to see post-roman (Vth century if I remember well )
tombstones with the very same motive in "Museu do Abade de Baçal", in
Bragança.
They have pictures of some in their site, look for
"A Epigrafia dos Zoelas"
http://www.utad.geira.pt/museus/coleccoes/index.asp?id=1
Also have seen it in mozarabic churches, as S. Pedro de Lourosa
(near Seia, Serra da Estrela).

Never seen it in manuscripts but I mainly looked after XII th century,
for now. I'll tell you if I find some.

Good Night,

Carlos Carvalho
(Maia - Portugal)

How do you Mr Carvalho?
It would be interesting to visit the dome where king Roderik or
Rodrigo was buried. It struck me also when I heard the name Leon that
I have heard it before. I wonder if you have heard about a picture-,
memorial-stone, that was erected in the 500 c? With a similar picture
as this in Martebo, and Sanda and Väskinde on Gotland etc.

Have you seen similar pictures with this whirl-disc shape in
scriptures under Witiza?

Cheers!
