from Gothic (even though the term was not used by

*****GK: Ther term "Kagan" is clearly of Turkic origin
and was adopted by their Iranic symbiots as well as by
the Norse warlords coming in from the Baltic. The term
"Rus" according to the Iranic interpretation, referred
at that time to the military aristocracy of Khazaria.
Initially, it seems, the Norse warbands had that kind
of relationship to the Khazars, declaring their
"independence" sometime in the early 9th c., and
adopting the title "Kagan" to indicate their new
