Consulting the 'danish etymology dict.' gives you: 

Hertug:
Olddanish Hærtogh, Norse Heretogi, Oldsaxon Heritogo, Oldenglish 
Heretogo.
Consists of 'hær' meaning army and the germanic *-tuqan -to lead-
like latin ducere.

It also mentions that it could been a loan from greek strategos....
