[gothic-l] Gothic Dipthongs

**************

My private opinion based on comparison
of some Gothic words with Old Russian
cognates is that:

‘ai’ might be pronounced rather like ä/æ
(example: “Airils” - “Yarilo”)
and ‘iu’ was pronounced rather like ü/œ
(example: “þiuda” - “Tchüd”).<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

But I have to stress that my statement
is contrary to the common knowledge that
the Gothic language had no umlauts !!!

Vladimir
