Hi,

the name Waldemar/Woldemar is of Old High German origin and means:
Waltan - to rule, and -mari - famous. The Russian name Vladimir is
possibly a direct translation. Vladi - (vladenyi - influence, power)
like in Vladikavkas or Vladivostok, meaning ruler of the caucasus or
the east. 'Mir' is possibly just taken from German 'mar', which was
also rendered as 'mir' occationally in German. E.g. in Gelimir,
Vidimir etc.. Alternatively, it may have adopted a slavic meaning for
mir = peace and world.

cheers
Dirk
