Hi Le,

If you look under "moon" in an English etymological dictionary, you
sould find attested cognates in all these languages and more:

OE móna
OHG, OS mâno
Go. mena
ON máni

etc. (all long root vowels, including Gothic).

These are exactly the forms linguists would expect to develop from
the Germanic root *mæ:n-. (The ending is descended from the Gmc. an-
stem in the case of ON and Go., but the ôn-stem, in the case of the
West Germanic languages.)

Germanic /æ:/ normally becomes /a:/ in WG and NG, but /e:/ in EG.
In OE, there is a further development to /æ:/ (or else the earlier
Germanic value remained unchanged), except before nasals, where the
usual development is to /o:/. Cf. OE nómon, cwómon, ON námu, kvámu,
Go. nemun, qemun.
