Hi Oscar,

the Goths were heavily mixed up with other ethnic groups. We know
this from various contemporary sources, which stated that many Roman
provincials, runaway slaves and miners had joined the Visigoths and
had become Goths themselves before they were driven into Spain.

An academic discussion of the degree to which the Goths were mixed
with other ethnic groups can be found in:

"The Visigoths from the Migration Period to the Seventh Century: An
Ethnographic Perspective (Studies in Historical Archaeoethnology)"

The most conservative estimate in this study is that about 50% of the
Goths were of non-Gothic origin, while other authors assume that this
share was much higher.

The Visigoths were essentially an army, led by a Gothic royal house.
An army without a real homeland is in contant need of new recruit.
There is no way that the natural birth rate within this group can
constantly replenish those warriors that perished in the many
battles. Thus, the Goths would have been rather studid not to welcome
people who could reenforce their military strength. And again, this
is a proven fact and not really subject to debate.

Cheers,
Dirk
