Using DNA to find Goths

I don't think purely military identities could have survives the  
defeats of 374-375 or 536-540. I don't think descent-based ones can  
match the personal histories where known. I don't think material- 
cultural ones could have survived the move from the Black Sea steppe  
to the Mediterranean. I don't think religious-ideological ones could  
have survived the conversion.

'Gothic' identity seems much more resilient.
