[gothic-l] The definite article in Gothic

I have a question about the definite article. Normally it isn't used. But there are 2 theories:
 

 1. The first time it isn't mentioned. Later however, the demonstrative pronoun (sa, so, þata) is used to designate a definite article.
 

 2. The definite article is not used at all and only demonstrative pronouns are used.
 

 Which one is more likely?
