I was thinking of 'frisahts' "image, example" (from 'sakan'), hence a<br>

Germanic words for divination can we think of? *spaha, fo = ON spá. <br>
OE has wítigdóm (cf. OE wít(e)ga "prophet, sooth-sayer"<wbr>, ON vitki<br>
"wizard" = Go. *weitaga). Maybe best stick to the attested<br>
'praufetja' "prophesy".<br>

Let's start making a list of questions for that. I'd be happy to go<br>
with the Streitberg/Braune method, but I'm still inclined to use the<br>
'ng' spelling, and inconsistently leave 'gk' in place. It's not such<br>
a problem when there are just 3000-5000 words in use, but once we<br>
start adding neologisms and names, the double value of 'gg' could get<br>
confusing. If there was a simple way of altering the 'gg' to signify<br>
/g:/ that would be fine too. The same goes for 'ái' and 'aí' --<br>
they're easy to predict at the moment, but a lot of loanwords could<br>
shake that up. I just suggested changing /ng/ as there is already an<br>
attested alternative in the manuscripts, whereas there isn't for /g:/.<br>
As you'll have gathered, I see no reason to suppose that these sounds<br>
had merged, as Marchand suggested; and the fact that the spelling 'ng'<br>
is never found for historical /g:/ speaks against that idea.<br>
