Given the forms OHG herizogo, OS heritogo, OE heretoga, the expected Gothic equivalent would in fact be *'harjatuga' (masc. n-stem).</div><div><br></div><div>The original sense appears to have been 'commander (of an army)' rather than a title indicating social rank. As such, the word corresponds to Byzantine Greek 'stratelates,' such that the Duden Herkunftswoerterbuch assumes that the attested words in OHG, OS, and OE derive from an unattested Gothic *harjatuga, which itself is thought to be a loan-translation of the Greek.
